HOW TO MAKE A SIMPLE BIO-GAS DIGESTER FROM EMPTY OIL DRUMS.
- Procure 11 empty oil drums (200litres each).
- Remove the bottoms from two of them.
- Remove both tops and bottoms from the 9 remaining.
- Procure two HDPE connectors 63mmØ from plumbing materials store.
- Procure 2m of HDPE piping 63mmØ from same kind of store.
- Fix an HDPE connector to each of the threaded openings of the two drums without bottoms.
- Cut the HDPE piping in two equal lengths and fix each at the HDPE connector on two drums,one drum becomes the tail end(slurry gets out,the other becomes the head end,raw animal waste + water gets in, make sure the two HDPE pipes are configured in a u-trap form so that material goes in or out but air is prevented from going in.(anaerobic condition inside).
- Measure the circumference of the drums at the top bead or bottom bead.
- Procure 2” wide mild steel flat bar at a hardware store long enough to go around the circumference at the beads(you just measured it) make ten pieces.
- Procure discarded inner tubing of car and cut into 2” wide strips 4” longer than the mild steel flat bars.
- At each end of the flat bars, weld two 12mm nuts and make sure you get a bolt fitting in the nuts and long enough to go through all the four nuts to be tightened so as to bring together the two ends of each flat bar and secure together the beads of drums so that they do not leak.
- Bring two drums together, end to end, the 9 that are open at both ends, as they get their beads touching, encircle the rubber strip around and the steel flat bar next so that the rubber strip is held between the steel bar and the drum bead, insert the bolt through the nuts and tighten until you are sure no water will leak from inside the drums.
- Repeat until all the 9 drums are one assembly.
- Make a trench long enough to accommodate 11 drums, incline it at 5° angle so that the head end is nearest the point at which animal waste gets out of your pens.
- At the far end place one of the two drums, open end towards animal pen and connect the 9 drum assembly to it, make sure the threaded hole with connector and piece of pipe is on top(the u-trap configuration).
- At the near end connect the remaining of the two drums following the same procedure,(rubber strip,flat bar,bolt and nuts no leakages)
- You have to get the services of a welder and make a half inch hole near the upper edge of the head drum(if the drum was vertical the hole would appear at the side near the top edge),this should have a Galvanized socket .5” welded and a .5” connector screwed plus a length of pipe towards consumption point (kitchen mostly) of biogas,this piping should be fixed with a bib cock somewhere on it and then more piping leads to an empty plastic bag for storing biogas.The empty plastic bag should be flat until filled by biogas,a consumption garden hose takes the gas to a cooker from there.
- . Fill the empty container,2000litres total volume,with animal dung+ water at a ratio of 3:2(dung:water),to begin with mix,cattle,goat,chicken,even pig waste if available,make sure the u-trap piping pieces are full of water after filling your system, wait for fourteen days and open the bib cock to let gas out of the system and into storage plastic tubing.
- You should build two small chambers at both inlet and outlet to allow for refilling of fresh waste every morning,just about ten litres of the mix,and flow away to farm of slurry, perfect manure.
